Telegram VPS Manager

Open-source Telegram bot for monitoring Linux servers and running authorized maintenance commands.

Project Overview

Telegram VPS Manager is an open-source bot for an administrator who wants basic Linux server checks from a private Telegram chat. It reports system information and can run maintenance commands on the host where the bot is installed. Access is limited to configured administrator accounts.

The problem

Small server tasks often require opening a terminal just to inspect disk space, processes, or logs. A chat interface can make those checks quicker, but command execution must remain explicit about who is allowed to use it and what it can protect. This project gives the administrator a compact remote control with a documented security boundary.

Key features

  • Status reports show CPU, memory, load, disk use, uptime, and network interfaces.
  • Commands inspect running processes, network details, disk state, and recent logs.
  • A run command executes a supplied shell command and returns its output.
  • An interactive conversation can collect a command before execution.
  • A restart command invokes the host reboot command.
  • The bot offers English and Arabic messages with a language switch.
  • Optional runtime admin management adds or removes approved users.
  • Long output is split into Telegram-sized messages with HTML escaping.

Technical architecture

The Node.js application uses grammY for Telegram updates and conversations. Middleware loads session and language state, checks that a private-chat sender is an allowed admin, then logs command names. Server readings come from Node's os module and operating-system commands. Admin additions and language choices are stored in local JSON files.

Engineering highlights

  • Authorization checks the Telegram sender ID and ignores groups and channels.
  • Shell execution has a timeout and output-size limit.
  • Command logging omits arguments supplied to the run command.
  • Escaped and chunked output avoids broken Telegram HTML and oversized replies.
  • Node tests cover authentication, log redaction, and message splitting.
